History

Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry was formed in June of 1990 when Camp Hiawatha of Deer River and Camp Vermilion of Cook merged.

Camp Hiawatha is a former LCA camp with 80 acres of land on Deer Lake and has a gentle terrain which slopes down to a beautiful sandy beach.  There is housing for 128 people year-round.

Camp Vermilion has a rugged terrain with hills; was a former ALC camp with 368 acres on Lake Vermilion.  Vermilion’s summer housing for 120 is nestled among some old and many newly planted red & white pine trees, as is the Retreat Center which houses 36 for winter use.

I am glad the two camps combining ended working out as I was on the Vermilion Board when we went ahead with combining. We had many doubts at the time.

  2. Thank you for sharing, Carl! The Camp Vermilion logo brings back good memories for many people – we would never want to lose it.

  3. I was glad to see the three pointed (trinity) Camp Vermilion logo still displayed on the website. My mother drew the logo in the early 1960s and it brings back good memories.

  4. I am seeking a old camp councelor. His name was Tate. It was maybe 1998? Thanks.

I like your suggestion, Luke! Both camps have interesting & unique histories. There are people at both sites with 50 or more years of involvement that would be valuable to capture & preserve here.

  6. I like the history section…I only wish there was more background information on both sites! We should celebrate the milestones that make each site unique, before and during the the VLM years! Mel Bakk was super influential in Vermilion and it would be cool to tell the story of how VLM came to be, and how it continues to thrive in God’s Great Northwoods!
